Seven members headed off under smoky skies with Devil's Peak as the day's destination. Leaving the Vancouver Picnic Area on Mount Seymour we were quickly on a series of mountain bike trails and were treated to seeing several riders making their way down some challenging rides.

It was not long however that we left the bike trails behind and found ourselves alone on a series of old logging corduroy roads (roads made from cut logs) and narrow hiking paths.

Route finding was a challenge at times and we were able to practice the essential techniques of U-turn's and backtracking. Overall it was a lovely trail. Quiet, mostly undulating with impressive moss and tall trees, though the size of some of the stumps certainly gave pause as to the size of the trees that used to be there. There were some tricky bits on the trail at times with several fallen trees to climb over or crawl under and a quite slippery creek crossing at the bottom of a ravine.

After a lunch stop at the 3.5 hour mark we made the group decision to start to head back rather than push on the end. Though only ~ 700 m away, the previous 300 m had taken quite a while. Somewhat surprisingly we almost halved the time on the way back. Some improved route finding certainly helped with this.

In summary, an very enjoyable day with good company. Impressive mountain biking trail building at the start / finish with some challenging route finding on the way. Corduroy roads and remnants of logging activity made it an interesting hike. We were reliant on following the recorded track from a previous visit a few years prior. There are no sign posts for the trail or route markers on it. We were the only ones on the trail.
