Barnston Island Ride, Sunday September 20th, 2026

Today's ride was a route from the King George Skytrain Station in Surrey to Barnston Island and back again.

Six members headed out under sunny skies, taking advantage of the trails through Green Timbers Urban Forest Park and Tynehead Regional Park. 15 km later we rode through an extensive lumber yard before popping out at the ferry to Barnston.

The ferry goes "on demand", which for us was pretty much straight away. The "ferry" is effectively a barge with a tug boat lashed to it. Cars have to reverse on and off at the Barnston Island end, as there is only one ramp. This made it fairly easy to tell who the locals were as opposed to the visitors, who were much more hesitant in their reversing. Crossing time was 5 minutes.

Once on Barnston it was a relaxing 10 km circumnavigation on a paved road, with perhaps 2 cars the whole time. Lunch was taken at the midway point at a nice sandy beach with a view of the Fraser River.

The return trip was as smooth as the way there, though there was some questioning about the trip description saying "mostly flat", as there was some minor elevation gain.

Overall it was 40 km of lovely cycling, with a great group of people, mainly on separated bike paths or very quiet roads. It was "mostly flat"....
