A fine repast, image by Sue
Hosts: Sue and Ramona
Attendance: 9 Travel Enthusiasts (and two others who sent virtual tips!)
The Vibe: A fantastic evening filled with good food, deep conversation, and plenty of laughter.
Where We’ve Been (and Where We’re Going)
Our conversation spanned the globe, covering a massive range of terrain and culture. Destinations included:
Europe: England, Scotland, Wales, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Italy.
The Americas: Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Bolivia.
Asia & Middle East: Vietnam, Cambodia, Nepal and Iran.
Africa: Nigeria and other countries along the West Coast.
Lessons from the Road
We didn’t just talk about the highlights; we got real about the "travel hiccups" that keep things interesting. Some hurdles discussed included:
Security: The nightmare of having a bag with valuables stolen. The benefit of bringing backup credit cards and cash and storing them separately.
Logistics: The specific (and often frustrating) challenge of getting a penknife through carry-on baggage.
Personal Limits: Navigating the mountains of Peru while managing a fear of heights.
Getting there: Airline deals that are available between mid November to mid December and first 2 weeks in January.
Apps: Merlin Bird and Seek by Naturalist, All-Trails.
Packing List: Adding items to your packing list that you may not have previously thought of including - like toilet paper!
Top Travel Tips & Tools
To make our future trips smoother, we shared some gold-standard advice:
Trusted Partners: Both Ramblers and HF Holidays came highly recommended for organized trips.
The Power of Planning: We discussed the "pro-traveler" approach—using spreadsheets for tracking and specific websites, apps and videos to stay organized. And always carry a phone with a data plan.
Risk Management: A big takeaway was the importance of thinking through "possible downsides" in advance and having a back-up plan ready to go.
A Note of Thanks: A tip of the hat to Sue for being such a gracious host. The food was wonderful and provided the perfect fuel for our global brainstorming!
