Urban/Forest Walk
Capilano Canyon by Sheila

Since Saturday’s forecast was for heavy rain, I changed this trip to the Sunday. Nine hikers enjoyed not a drop of rain and only a few clouds in the sky. It was warm and sunny in the open and cooler in the forest. We started and ended at my place, so no need for carpooling.
This was partly an urban walk on quieter back streets and only two short sections on busier ones. Once we hit the start of a trail by the Capilano Fish Hatchery we hiked through the forest until we reached the pipeline bridge, crossed over then hiked up to the Giant Fir tree. After that it was a short jaunt to Cleveland Dam where we enjoyed a leisurely lunch. Crossing over Capilano Road we walked through Cleveland Park and again entered a forested area called Grousewoods Park where we crossed a few bridges over the small creeks in the area. After another short jaunt uphill, we hooked up with the Power Line Trail, then started down one of the many connecting trails through the forest to the top of Skyline Drive, crossed over Montroyal Blvd and hooked back up to the Mosquito Creek Trail. Along the way we stopped for a coffee and treat at Le Petit Café (a side trail and bridge connects the Delbrook Plaza to Mosquito Creek), before the final walk home.
This route was a mix of sidewalks, flat, uphill and downhill forested trails, gravel paths, stairs and bridge crossings. It was mostly a loop route, 16km RT, 5 hours with stops, 450m EG.
A great day!
