Elk Mountain, snow and spikes

Long Misty Days, image by Tamsin

Ten hardy souls braved the elements to hike up the Elk Mountain trail just East of Chilliwack. The weather was quite warm and rain showers seemed to be the theme of the day.  Due to previous rain the trail was quite bare until near the top; so at that point we all put on our micro-spikes. Near the top we hit soft, slushy snow about a foot deep (This made for an interesting and slippery descent).  We stopped for a quick lunch break in the shelter of the trees at the top.  “Peek-a-boo” views of the valleys below were visible as the mist rolled by.  Total hiking distance was 8.5 km and hiking time was 5 hours.  Despite the rain it was an enjoyable hike with a great group of people!
